One of the most important environmental struggles in the greater Toronto region is to rescue the 125 acre David Dunlap Forest in the center of the urbanized core of Richmond Hill between Bayview Avenue and close to Yonge Street. The forest is part of a larger 189 parcel which was largely reforested to reduce light pollution for the operation of the David Dunlap Observatory. The site include meadows and the precinct area for the Observatory, where black holes were discovered by a University of Toronto astronomer, Dr. David Bolton. Some 42 acres of the forest would be mowed down for luxury homes, if proposed zoning amendments now before the Ontario Municipal Board, (OMB) are approved.
